What Zupzi Read teaches, in order

Every level and every lesson of Zupzi Read's phonics path: 11 levels and 134 lessons, from first sounds to long words.

In short

Zupzi Read follows a structured phonics sequence of 11 levels and 134 lessons (10 in Sound Steps, 9 in First Letters, 21 in The Alphabet, 7 in Blends, 12 in Digraphs, 9 in Magic E, 14 in Long Words, 18 in Vowel Teams, 4 in Diphthongs and Silent Letters, 12 in Prefixes and Suffixes, 18 in Rare Spellings). Every sound-spelling is introduced in one lesson, and the word lists of each lesson use only the sound-spellings taught up to that lesson, plus 65 heart words along the way. This page lists all of it, generated from the app's own curriculum file.

The rules of the order

  • Sounds you can stretch come first: a, m and s open Level 1.
  • Look-alike letters are kept apart: d comes in Level 2, lesson 2, and b in lesson 6.
  • Words wait for their sounds: a word joins a lesson's list only when every sound in it has been taught; the rest are heart words, taught with their tricky part marked.
  • Moving on follows the answers, not the calendar: a lesson moves on when its new sound is mostly right (60%), or after 3 sessions with the sound coming back in review. A sound counts as mastered after four right answers in the last five, without help, and comes back for review after 1, 3, 7, 14 and 30 days.

How to read this page

Each level shows its lessons in order, with the new spellings (like “sh as in ship”), a few words from the lesson's word list and the heart words, with the tricky part marked by a heart. On your child's map each level is a place, from Sunny Meadow to Cloud Castle; grown-ups see the level names used here.

My map: a winding path of numbered stones through a meadow, the first five done, the reader's picture on stone 6, locked stones ahead, and the banner Daisy Field.
My map: each level is a place
The reader's home screen: a treehouse porch at sunset, “Hi, Ana!”, today's lesson card with the letter p “as in pig” and a green Start button, Pip the Pig at the corner, and three doors: My map, My books and Together.

Questions about the scope and sequence

How many levels and lessons does Zupzi Read have?

11 levels and 134 lessons: 10 in Sound Steps, 9 in First Letters, 21 in The Alphabet, 7 in Blends, 12 in Digraphs, 9 in Magic E, 14 in Long Words, 18 in Vowel Teams, 4 in Diphthongs and Silent Letters, 12 in Prefixes and Suffixes, 18 in Rare Spellings.

Does every lesson teach something new?

Each lesson brings new sound-spellings, a new word shape (like blends), a spelling rule or a review; in Level 0, letter names and listening practice. The words of each lesson use only the sound-spellings taught up to that lesson, and heart words already taught.

In what order should phonics be taught?

There are many good orders. Zupzi Read's starts with sounds you can stretch, keeps look-alike letters apart, and lets words in only when all their sounds have been taught. This page lists every lesson.

Can I start my child at a later level?

Yes. A grown-up can choose “Start at level” for each reader in Grown-ups, and the reading game suggests a starting point. Skills your child already has are skipped as they show them.

One sound at a time.
One book at a time.
