Effective date: September 30, 2026
These are the terms for using the Zupzi Read app for iPhone and iPad (coming soon to the App Store as “Zupzi: Learn to Read & Phonics”). We kept them short and plain, because a parent should be able to read them. Zupzi Read is published by Leonardo Mennela de Jesus Franco, an individual developer in the United States (“Zupzi”, “we”, “us”).
Accepting these terms
By using Zupzi Read, you agree to these Terms of Use and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.
Who sets it up
Zupzi Read has no account. It is set up on each device by a grown-up, who must be at least 18 years old and the parent or legal guardian of every child they add as a reader. Children do not agree to these terms; you do, on their behalf.
What Zupzi Read is
Zupzi Read is a phonics app for families with children ages 3 to 8. It teaches reading in English, one sound at a time: lessons in which a teacher’s voice says the sounds, letter names and words; decodable books, with every page checked against the sounds taught so far; a reading game that suggests where to start; and short sessions for a grown-up and a child together. With a grown-up’s permission, it can listen when a child reads aloud, on the device. Everything it saves stays on the device (and in your device backups, if you make them); we receive it only if you send it to us.
Your responsibilities as a parent
- Only add children you are responsible for.
- Decide how and when your child uses the app. The Grown-ups area and the way out of a child’s home ask for Face ID, Touch ID or the device passcode, but they are not a substitute for a grown-up nearby. On a device with no passcode, they open without asking.
- Decide whether the app may listen. Listening is one setting for the whole device, and you can turn it off at any time.
- The reading diary describes your child’s reading. If you share it, share it only with people you trust.
Acceptable use
Please do not:
- copy, sell or share the app’s lessons, books, pictures, characters or voice clips outside the app;
- try to break, modify or reverse-engineer the app, except where a license listed below allows it for that component;
- use the app in a way that breaks the law or someone else’s rights.
The content, and the licenses we use
- The lessons, books, illustrations, characters and voice clips in Zupzi Read are ours or used with permission. You may use them in the app for your family’s personal, non-commercial use.
- The voices are clips made before release with voice-generation software. They are not recordings of a real teacher.
- Zupzi Read also includes open-source work, each under its own license: the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary (Copyright © 1993–2015 Carnegie Mellon University), which the app uses to know how words sound; the Andika font (Copyright © 2004–2022 SIL International) and the Nunito font (Copyright © 2014 The Nunito Project Authors), under the SIL Open Font License 1.1; WhisperKit (MIT License) and FluidAudio (Apache License 2.0), which run the listening on the device; the Whisper small.en speech model by OpenAI, in the Core ML version by Argmax (MIT License); and the Parakeet TDT-CTC 110M speech model by NVIDIA, in the Core ML version by FluidInference, under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license.
- The full license texts of the dictionary, the two fonts and the two libraries are in the app: Grown-ups, then About, then Licenses. Nothing in these terms limits what those licenses allow.
About lessons, listening and progress
Zupzi Read is practice at home. It is not a school, a test or a diagnosis of any reading difficulty, and it doesn’t replace a teacher. What the app shows you about progress comes from what it measured on the device (answers in the lessons, the quick checks and the reading game): a helpful picture, not a grade. Listening by software can mishear, especially in a noisy room, so reading aloud never decides progress on its own, and under 6 (or with no age set) listening only encourages. Every child learns at their own pace, and we can’t promise that your child will read by a certain age or date. If you have questions about your child’s reading, talk with their teacher or their pediatrician.
Free, and nothing for sale
Zupzi Read is free. There is nothing for sale in the app, and it has no ads. If we ever offer paid features, we will tell you clearly before anything costs money, and your child’s progress will not be locked or deleted because of it.
Apple
The app is licensed to you under Apple’s Standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement. These terms add to it; where they conflict about the license to use the app, Apple’s agreement controls. Apple is not responsible for Zupzi Read or its support; we are.
Ending things
You can stop using Zupzi Read at any time. There is no account to close: to remove everything the app saved on a device, delete the app from that device, as the Privacy Policy explains.
Availability and liability
We work to keep Zupzi Read working, but it is provided “as is” and “as available”: features can change, and listening can mishear. Everything the app saves lives on your device and we have no copy, so if the device is lost or reset, or the app is deleted, the progress can come back only from a backup of your device, if you have one. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for the loss of progress stored on your devices. Nothing here removes rights you have as a consumer under the law where you live.
Changes to these terms
Zupzi Read has no account and no e-mail list, so we can’t write to you. If we change these terms in a way that matters, we will post the new version here, with a new date, before the change takes effect, and mention it in the notes of the app update that brings the change. Continuing to use Zupzi Read after that means you accept the new terms; if you do not, you can stop using it and delete the app.
Law
These terms are governed by the laws of the United States, where Zupzi is operated. If you live in Brazil, Brazilian law and the consumer protections of the Código de Defesa do Consumidor also apply to you, and nothing here takes them away. Wherever you live, you keep the consumer rights the law gives you.
